Hi all,
With much excitement surrounding the upcoming indoors in the new National Indoor Athletics Arena there are many ?S about how the relay works. Please see below for example of 4X100 where 3rd athlete cuts in. The track is marked with small cones to show where you can break in. Also note the lane position for the final handover which is advised by the official based on where teams are positioned coming into the bend prior to final baton pass. Notice the really smart move by the last Leevale athlete pushing the gaining athlete out wide to use his positional advantage to win.
In the 4x200 relay below the 2nd runner breaks in; again the point where you can break in is marked by cones. You must be past the cone to break out of your lane. Please also note the other baton passes and how the receiving athlete starts running before the incoming athlete gets to them but, different to outdoor relays they look back to ensure athlete can get baton to them. Remember your team mate coming in has run a 200mtr split and their tank is probably empty. HELP YOUR TEAM MATE!!!! The official will tell you where to stand based on your teams position coming into the bend prior to next baton pass - LISTEN. Note how they position on video below to set themselves up for baton pass.
