Indoor Championships 2016

The 2016 Dublin Juvenile Indoor Championships began on Friday evening in Santry with some really good performances from our young athletes.
Friday night’s showstopper was without a shadow of doubt U17 Shane Keane’s performance in the long jump competition. He opened his account with a new PB of 6.24M. Delighted with that score in the bag, growing in confidence and maintaining concentration, he powered down the runway and launched himself into a massive 6:69M leap aided by a very impressive hitch kick. Very consistent on the board it was definitely going to be his night and he deservedly took the gold medal along with compliments from all quarters. Shane also took silver in the 200M on Saturday with a very strong performance behind the majestic Templeogue athlete Shola Adoda.
Patrick Gilcevea u16 took gold in the Long Jump with his first (……cough splutter!…..only legal) jump of 6:15M and a new PB for him. He then won the High Jump competition with a very comfortable, or, let’s call it spacious, 1:60M jump and subsequently topped off his evening’s effort with gold in the Shot Putt 12;.89. John Nugent U17 did what was needed to secure himself gold in High Jump with a 1:60M jump which he made look very easy indeed and then he took silver in the Long Jump with a 5:85M.
Anna Lyons U16 also had busy and fruitful evening coming away with a bronze in the Shot, bronze in the High Jump with a 1:35 and silver in Long Jump. Nadine Deehan U15 took bronze in the Long Jump. We also saw very nice performances from the Brown twins, Sarah and Lyndsey, U15 taking respectively gold 10:34M and bronze 7:77M in the Shot Putt.
On Saturday morning on the track Rhianna McCarthy U19 took silver in the 200M with a very measured run. Sam Bolger U17 qualified for the final of the 200M as the fastest loser and gave a great account of himself in the final, running very strongly and battling all the way to the line.
On Sunday in Tallaght, however, there was much joy for Sam and the other members of the Cru U17 team John Nugent, Peter Murphy and Patrick Gilcevea (running up an age group) where they each ran out of their collective skins in the 4 x200m relay taking gold in great style, way ahead of the silver medallists DSD. Fantastic team effort there. Well done to all.
Back to Saturday, medallists in the jumps were Arianna Francis U14 silver in the long jump with a 4:35M. Charlie Lyons U14 won a bronze in both the High Long Jumps. Conor Napper U12 took bronze in his first High jump competition with a 1:25 jump. Well done Conor! Tess O’Loughlin U12 won silver in the long jump with a 3:75M. New member Sam Berman U13 won gold in the long Jump with a 4:02 in his first competition. There were PBs too for a delighted Lauren Kirwin U14 and an equally happy Emily Lyne U12. On the track Annalivia Pezzillo U12 ran a great 600M heat to place 2nd. The final came too soon, unfortunately, but she did not give up and did her best! Well done Annalivia.
Emily Shiels came 2nd in the U19 400m with a PB of 63 secs and David Heavey U19 won bronze in the Long Jump with 5:77M. Well done to both.
As well as the medallists, Ju Cru gave a great account of themselves over the weekend. The teams that turned out for the relays fought very hard in their races. The 2 U12 girls’ teams (Sara Caird, Lauren Darcy, Emily Lyne, Tess O’Loughlin / Annalivia Pezzillo, Lucy Doyle, Mila Pfeiffer Reddy, Rosie Muldowney, made their final and ran really well but the opposition was just too strong…. not to mention tall! The U14 girls’ team, Rachel Caird, Arianna Francis, Beibhinn and Sadbh O’Higgins,  also made the final and ran well, but again, against very strong opposition it just was not going to be their day. The U14 boys’ team of Luke O’Loughlin, Jack French Naoise Kelly and Emmett Lane U13 subbing up had a very tough 4×200 against noticeably bigger competition. Luke ran a fantastic last leg, narrowing a big gap between himself and the next runner.
There were winners on the track in the middle distance races from some of our very new members… more news of these anon
Well done to all the athletes.
